Monosex tilapia fry

Farm Gate Sales:

Sex reversed 1” tilapia fry (over 99% male), of all strains, are available all year round, but demand is high and customers should book fish well in advance.  Fish are generally in short supply during May to July due to hot weather depressing egg production, and December to February due to cold temperature affecting growth and survival of fry.  Red tilapia are particularly affected during the cold season and customers should think about stocking up on fish during the late rainy season from September to November when fry production is very high.  Nam Sai Farms sometimes has a price reduction during this period to encourage farmers to clear stock.  Large numbers of fry are often available also from March to April, as demand can be low due to shortage of water.

Farm gate prices are provided in the table.  They may be subject to change due to the reasons mentioned above.  In the case that there is a shortage of fry, a queue system is used based on the date that a customer puts in his order and on the size of the order (small orders are cleared quicker).  Agents (any person or company that buys 500,000 fish within 6 months) need not order fish in advance, as they will be give a quota based on their needs for that month.  70% of production is generally allocated to agents and the remaining 30% sold directly to farmers.

1” fry are packed at 1,000 fish per bag plus an extra 5% to allow for any mortality.  A free bag is given for every 50 purchased.  The fish are starved prior to packing to ensure that the water in the bags stays clean and ammonia is not a problem.  Fish can either be picked up in the morning from 08:00 to 10:00 or in the afternoon from 13:00 to 15:00.  Transporting fish during the middle of the day is not recommended, particularly if air temperatures are very high, as significant mortality can occur.  Use of a pick-up liner and covering the fish with wet sacking is advised to keep temperature down.  Up to 310 bags can be transported in a 1 ton pick-up truck with high sides (“song taew”).  Alternatively, Nam Sai can send fish by air (see transport) to customers located in the far North and South of the country.

For customers located 7 hours or more from Nam Sai, the risk of fry mortality during transport is higher than for local customers.  Nam Sai has a challenge test which can identify strong fish most suitable for these destinations.  If you are located more than 7 hours away from Nam Sai Farm, then please request a challenge test on your fish if they haven’t already done so.   Nam Sai will provide new fry to cover losses or return money to customers that get substantial mortality during transport due to fish of poor quality.  Customers should preserve any dead fish in formalin and should report any dead fish as soon as possible to our sales staff.

Although the majority of fry are sold at 1” (0.25g), there are also larger sizes available from time to time (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 g) and can be reared specially on request.  They are sold at a slightly higher price and are packed at 200 to 800 fish per bag depending on size.

Payment for fish can be done by bank transfer (bring slip as evidence of payment), in cash or by cashiers cheque.

Export Sales:

Monosex 1” fry can be supplied in any strain and are available all year round.  Only the best quality fry (identified by challenge test) are used for export in order to minimize the risk of mortality during transport.  Overseas customers need not worry about ordering fry in advance, as priority is given to export sales.  Prices are higher for export, however, due to the extra paperwork, time involved in communicating, losses due to fluctuating exchange rate, etc.

Monosex 1” fry are packed in bags with oxygen (4 bags per box) inside foam boxes (size 60 x 45 x 30).  Temperature is reduced to improve survival and ice can be packed in the boxes to maintain the low temperature if necessary.  Stocking density per box depends very much on transport time and varies from 1,000 to 2,000 fish.  For example, a packing density of 1,400 fish per box (Nile tilapia) is generally used to Europe (36 hours total transport time).

Many customers enquire about insurance for fish in transport, but unfortunately there are no insurance companies willing to insure live fish at this time.  Nam Sai can only do its best to ensure that the fish are of ideal size (not too large) and quality so that the fish arrive in good condition.  The biggest risk is due to airline delay and most airlines will take responsibility if they are at fault.  It is important that a qualified vet and a representative of the airline are there to inspect the delayed fish in the case that a flight is delayed to the point that heavy mortality is expected.

A health certificate is provided, at cost, to all customers.  This entails sending a sample of fish to the Aquatic Animal Health Research Institute in Bangkok.  If no disease pathogens are found, a health certificate is issued.  Nam Sai recommends customers still take precautions against transfer of external parasites by bath treating with potassium permanganate for 15-30 minutes at a concentration of 10 ppm.  This can be done on arrival or later if the fish are quarantined.
